Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge Posted: 17/01/25

It was a personal and compelling speech that delved into the realm of what it means to be from mixed heritage.

A Regional Final of the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge is a public celebration of young people, and this years Barnet Regional Final, hosted by the London Academy on Tuesday 14 January was no exception.  What a treat to hear so many fantastic speeches by such talented young people!  The evening was compered by Jonathan Drew (workshop facilitator) and Muhammad F (last year’s winner).  The evening was packed with original and insightful ideas from many young speakers.

Erika K, 10 Bow represented Wren Academy with her speech entitled: 'Half or Hafu?' It was a personal and compelling speech that delved into the realm of what it means to be from mixed heritage.  In Erika’s case, both Japanese and Irish. Although she did not win, the judges and audience were impressed by her passionate and thought provoking speech.  She was presented with her certificate by the Mayor of Barnet, Tony Vourou.  Well done Erika!
