Design and Technology Day Posted: 7/02/25

The children enjoyed a range of Design and Technology projects across the school, designing making and evaluating whilst learning new skills!

Reception

Reception children have been reading The Three Little Pigs and enjoyed an exciting and engaging DT Day, exploring the suitability of different materials to build a strong house for the pigs. They applied their problem solving skills taking time to design, build and evaluate their houses made from marshmallows, spaghetti and sugar cubes!

Year 1

Year 1 had an exciting and creative DT Day, where they explored the fascinating world of moving mechanisms! The day began with a look at different moving parts found in children's books. They then designed and built incredible space themed pictures, featuring spinning planets using split pins and sliding rockets powered by levers. The classroom buzzed with enthusiasm as the children experimented with their designs, problem solved and proudly showcased their finished masterpieces.

Year 2

In Year 2, the children have been learning about the types of houses that existed during the time of the Great Fire of London and how their structure contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. To bring their learning to life, they designed and built their own model houses in DT using paper and card.

Year 3

On DT Day, our Year 3 children explored the world of sewing, learning about the 60,000 year old history of the needle. They followed a four part process: technical knowledge, design, making and evaluation. The children sketched bookmark ideas and used cross stitch techniques to create fabric bookmarks, gaining insights into different stitches and their purposes.

Year 4

Year 4 enjoyed a fantastic Design and Technology (DT) day, where the children had the opportunity to create their very own labyrinths! After learning about the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur as part of our Ancient Greece topic, they were inspired to design and build labyrinths using straws and cardboard.

Year 5

Year 5 greatly enjoyed a bridge building DT day earlier this term. We learnt about the history and design of different types of bridges. Later in the day, we designed our own bridges, incorporating our engineering and technology knowledge about trusses. Finally, we built our bridges in teams. The children did a wonderful job and most, though sadly not all, survived the highlight of the day ….. the earthquake test.

Year 6

For our Design and Technology Day, we explored the fascinating world of sound by asking, What is sound? and how does it travel?

We also looked at the remarkable contributions of British inventors to sound technology. After gaining a solid understanding of sound vibrations and how they travel through the air, we applied this knowledge by designing and crafting sound amplifiers within our groups.
