A Level Maths in Action Posted: 14/11/25
On Tuesday 11 November, 35 Maths students from Years 12 and 13 attended some mathematical lectures at the Emmanuel Centre, London. These lectures looked at ways in which mathematics is used to model the real world.
There was a lecture of using mathematical modelling in the world of pokemon. For example, how many burgers would you need to feed a Charizard to keep it alive everyday - the answer came to about 50 burgers a day! There were other lectures on fractals and the famous mandlebrot set, as well as the mathematics of knitting among others. The students had a brilliant day and this event will be helpful for UCAS applications and interviews.
One of our students said this about the event:
The Maths In Action trip is known to be nothing short of fantastic and it certainly lived up expectations again this year. Each mathematician brought genuine enthusiasm and fascinating topics to the stage. A personal favourite was so hard to choose, but I would have to say Nira Chamberlain takes it for his memorable performance: ‘Why Maths is Indisputably the Greatest Subject in the World’, which not only was hilarious, but it also showed how mathematics underpins so many areas of modern life.
Thank you to Mr Ashman from all the students for organising a really fun and inspiring day.
