A Level Design and Technology Trip Posted: 16/01/26

The building itself became a learning tool;

Year 12 and 13 Design students recently took part in an inspiring educational visit to the V&A Storehouse, the UCL Exhibition and Here East, aimed at broadening their understanding of design beyond the classroom.

At the V&A Storehouse, students explored objects without labels, encouraging them to observe form, material, function and context without preconceived ideas.  This approach helped students develop a more critical and unbiased design perspective.  The building itself became a learning tool; its extensive use of glass created a sense of transparency, with each floor revealing deeper layers of the space.  This openness prompted discussion around honesty in design, spatial experience and how architecture can influence perception.

The visit continued at UCL, where students viewed an exhibition displaying Master’s level architecture work.  They engaged with a range of exhibitors, gaining insight into how technology is integrated into contemporary architectural practice and how traditional boundaries of architecture are being challenged through digital tools and experimental display methods.

Finally, students explored Here East as a live urban design case study, examining how the area has evolved and how its structure influences movement, activity and community use today.

Overall, the trip enriched students’ understanding of product design by connecting objects, spaces, technology and urban context, reinforcing design as a multidisciplinary and socially responsive practice.
